Carbon and Emery Compete in Matt Burr Invite in Salina, Erin Hurst Breaks Emery Record in St. George

The Carbon Dinos finished in fourth place at the Matt Burr Invitational Saturday out of 25 teams while two athletes from Emery High took part in the Pine View Invitational over the weekend.

The Dinos scored a total of 97 points and finished behind Grand, San Juan and North Summit.

Carbon sophomore Sarah Ohlwiler earned 23 of her team’s 97 points. She finished first overall in the long jump, notching a 15’9” leap to finish in front of 36 other jumpers. She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, just .01 seconds behind the first place finisher. Ohlwiler added a fifth place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and an eighth in the 100 meters.

Zaharah Rossi finished the 1600 meters in second place, just three seconds behind first. Taylor Oliver notched a second place showing in the javelin. Gabe Vandyke nabbed a third in the 300-meter hurdles.

Spartan runners Ashlynn Allred and Erin Hurst competed in the Pine View Invitational and performed well. Allred finished third in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Hurst ran the 3200 meters in 12:01:52, which broke the school record set by Angela Gentry in 1994. Gentry’s mark was 12:09:34.

Carbon will have this weekend off before traveling to Vernal for the Uintah Invitational on April 11. Emery will compete in a meet at Millard High School on Tuesday, then at Manti on April 10.
