Two representatives of Carbon Caring for Kids were in attendance at the recent Carbon County Commission meeting. The reason for this was because they were being presented with a check made possible by the funds raised from a number of recent local events.

Frank Ori, Director for Carbon Recreation, spoke on behalf of the check presentation. He stated that the local women in charge of Carbon Caring for Kids are the reason that the fundraisers took place. Carbon Caring for Kids was started by a handful of women who noticed that a lot of the children locally don’t have the food that they need when they go home from school.

With this in mind, they developed the program, which discreetly provides the students with food to take home with them. In the beginning, this program was only going to take place over the Thanksgiving holiday. However, when those involved saw how needed it was, they decided to continue it. Carbon Caring for Kids is 100% donation and volunteer ran.

“It has been overwhelming, the amount of help the community has put into it,” a representative of the program stated.

The recent Castleview Weight-loss 5K raised a great portion of the funds donated to the program. There was also a charity softball tournament that took place to raise money. A total of $3,055 was raised for the organization.

Commission Jake Mellor then took some time to inform the program that he will be a part of a panel discussion with the lieutenant governor and is going to identify four things in the community that are helping people in our area get out of poverty. He stated that Carbon Caring for Kids is one of the organizations that he will spotlight and thanked the women for what they do.

“How can they focus on what they need to get out of the cycle of poverty if they can’t even eat?” Mellor asked.

The program representatives were presented with the check, which will be used to purchase food and other resources needed.
