The Carbon High Lady Dinos softball team kicked off their season Tuesday night against the Emery High Spartans. The Dinos scored 18 runs on 21 hits to win the season opener, 18-7.

Carbon’s head coach Kirt Nunley, explained that seven of the team’s 21 hits were for extra bases. The team scored in every inning except the top of the seventh. The Dino’s biggest inning came in the fourth, when the team scored seven runs.

Lauren Rice went 5- 5 at the plate and Taylor Passarella had three doubles in the game. The winning pitcher for Carbon was McKenna Sorenson.

Emery rallied in the bottom of the third by crossing the home plate four times, narrowing the score to 6-4. A three run inning in the fifth would end the Spartans rally.

Spartan’s head coach Shaun Bell feels that the team needs to work on defense, but was pleased with the way the girls hit the ball. “We had no strike-outs during the game,” Bell said. “It was good to have our varsity players hit the ball and not strike out.”

Despite losing to the Dinos on Tuesday, Emery easily walked away with a 14-5 win over Beaver on March 8. Jadree Huntington hit a triple and Taylor Payne had a double in the non-region game.

Both Emery and Carbon will compete in the Snow Canyon Spring Tournament in St. George this weekend.
