Students at Creekview Elementary are participating in The Hour Of Code. The coding program provides students with the opportunity to learn about and write computer codes during a one hour, hands-on session.

According to principal John Thomas, the goal is to introduce children to the world of computer science. Simple games are structured for children to analyze and complete using commands. These commands are simple codes that virtually write the computer game.

“We had our kindergarten students in the computer lab writing codes,” explained Thomas. “These programs are made for each learning level and provides students with an understanding for computer coding, an area of technology not usually explored by elementary aged children. Some may find that they like doing this and may chose to work in a similar field.”

Computer Science Education Week kicked off on Monday. It is expected that five million students in 34,000 classrooms across 167 countries will be the first to experience this learning tool this week alone.

Although the students are participating in the activity at school, Thomas explained that learning can continue at home. “The kids will be able to log on to the same programs at home,” he explained. “It’s a way to teach computer science but with a fun, playful twist.”

Creekview students in the computer lab all agreed that it is a fun way to learn.
