For the second straight weekend, the Carbon High Track Team excelled at their invitational meet despite severe weather. At the Uintah Invitational the girl’s team ran away with first place and the boy’s placed second, missing the win by just 5 points.

Head Coach, Jimmy Jewkes attributed the results to the team going into the meet with a positive attitude despite the weather conditions. Jewkes knew that his team was in for a challenge at the meet, facing 12 other schools, with teams from Uintah and Wasatch out-manning his squad by three athletes to one.

The Carbon Girls Team blew away their nearest opponent, scoring 159.75 points to Uintah’s 137.25. Karrisa Nelson and Regan Powell led the team in points. Nelson placed first in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, second in the javelin, and third in long jump. Powell swept the distance races, placing first in the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs, and helped her 4×400-meter relay team to a third place finish.

The Boy’s team was led by Daulton Nelson, who jumped 20′ 3″ in the long jump, winning and qualifying for state in the event. Nelson also took second in the 200-meter dash. Luke Olsen and Stefan Larsen pushed each other to a tie for third in the 400-meters, and in his first attempt at the 110-meter hurdles, Kaleb Kulow also stepped up to help the team, placing third.

Jewkes was pleased with his teams’ effort, saying they “gave up personal glory to try to win the meet.”
