Dino Swimmers Finish Season at State Competition

The Carbon Dinos swim team participated in the state championship meet Feb. 14-15. Eighteen teams and over 600 athletes competed in the event that was hosted at BYU.

Carbon had six swimmers who successfully ended their season at the championship meet. The top 16 relay teams competed at the state meet and all three Dino girls relay teams qualified for the event.

The 200 medley relay team was made up of freshmen Addy Olson, Sadie Crompton and Veronica Ibanez along with junior Susannah Ohlwiler. Olson swam the backstroke leg with a 34.62; Crompton completed the breaststroke leg at 36.03; Ibanez swam the butterfly in 32.08 and Ohlwiler completed in the freestyle leg with a time of  28.73. The team placed ninth with an overall time of  2:11.46.

The 200 free relay team consisted of junior Lauren Engar, senior Brittney Willson, Olson and Crompton. Engar finished her leg of the relay in 29.22: Olson with a time of 27.97, Crompton finished in 29.30 and Willson finished in 28.31. The team earned a tenth place finish with a final time of 1:54.80.

Finally, in the 400 free relay, Engar swam a 1:04.53, Ibanez clocked in at 1:06.94, Ohlwiler finished with a split time of 1:05.87 and Willson ended with a time of 1:02.93. The team’s overall time of 4:20:29 earned them tenth place.

Carbon also qualified three boy’s relay teams by finishing in the top 16. The 200 free relay team consisted of sophomorse Joseph Keller and Kaden Earl, junior Ryan Atwood and senior Joel Garff. Keller finished his leg of the event with a time of 25.12, Atwood finished in 26.49, Earl clocked in at 25.74 and Garff completed the race with in 24.16. The team placed ninth with a final time of 1:41.51.

The same four swimmers competed in the 400 free relay event with. Keller swam a time of 56.10, Atwood 1:01.53, Earl finished in 59.90 and Garff rounded out the relay with a time of 53.65. The team’s overall time of 3:51.18 earned them ninth place honors.

Placing 16th was the 200 medley relay team who included Will Luarsen, Connor Holyoak, Garrett Marsing and Atwood. Laursen swam the backstrock in a time of 41.00, Marsing swam the breaststroke in 35.01, Atwood swam the butterfly in 31.55 and Holyoak finished in the freestyle leg with a time of 28.81.

In individual events, the top 24 swimmers advanced to the state meet. Carbon had 13 swimmers in the competition. Garff placed 10th overall in the 50 free, finishing with a time of 24.11. He also competed in the 100 free and finished 12th overall with a time of 53.70.

Willson competed in the girl’s 50 and 100 free events. She placed 13th in the 100 free with a time of 1:03.24 and 22nd in the 50 free with a time of 28.65.

Larsen swam her first state meet and placed 23rd in the 100 fly with a time of 1:23.98. Marsing grabbed 24th place in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a 1:17.78

Engar swam the 200 I.M. and finished in 16th place with a time of 2:42.04. She also placed 16th in the 100 fly with 1:13.18  Ohlwiler finished 20th with a time of 1:07.20 in the 100 free.

Keller swam the 200 free and finished 14th overall with a 2:05.08 time. He went into this event ranked 23rd and took seven seconds off his best time. He also swam the 100 back with a time of 1:06.01, moving up two spots to take 15th place.

Ali Heath moved from 24th place to 19th in the 100 free with a time of 1:07.10. Earl swam the 100 free placing 24th with a time of 1:01.16. Tavery Larsen swam the 100 back taking 24th place with a time of 1:23.99.

Olson had an outstanding meet killing her previous times in the 200 I.M. She was ranked 20th going into the meet and shaved eight seconds off her best time with a 2:38.38 finish. This moved her into 13th place. In the 100 breaststroke event, she cut four seconds off her best time and moved from 24th to 13th place with a time of 1:21.92.

Ibanez has been strong all season. In the 100 fly, she placed 15th with a time of 1:12.77. In the 500 free, she placed 16th with a 6:32.55 finish.

Crompton swam the 100 breaststroke, recording her personal best time of 1:20.96 and finishing in 12th place.

“Overall, out of 18 teams, the girls placed 12th and the boys placed 14th,” explained coach Kamra Davis. “I am very pleased with the progress my team has made this season after losing 20 swimmers last year because of graduation or they were foreign exchange students.”

“I wasn’t quite sure what this season would bring,” Davis continued. “We have a lot of new swimmers that will be here for a few years and I am excited for the next season. We have some good swimmers that will be in the ninth grade who will be a great addition. Thanks for a great year, swimmers.”
