Emery, Carbon Track Compete In First Meet Of 2012

Having practiced just two weeks, the Emery High School track team competed in the Moab Red Rock Invitational on Saturday and finished in third place overall.

Emery girl’s finished in the tie for second place with Grand County, and Emery boy’s finished third. Carbon finished fourth overall, the girl’s placing fifth while the boy’s finished in fourth.

Emery Head Coach Todd Jeffs was happy with what he saw out of his team so early on in the season.

“I am proud of the team,” he said. “I was a little worried about the first meet but the team did better than expected.”

Emery’s Ashlynn Allred, just a freshman, finished first in the 100 meters with a time of 12.98. Imari Black, a sophomore from Montezuma-Cortez High School in Cortez, Colo., came in second at 13.26. Carbon’s Amanda Freestone placed third with a time of 13.56.

Allred then crushed the competition in the 200 meters with a winning time of 27.14. Freestone placed second with a time of 28.13, nearly a full second behind Allred.

Carbon’s Regan Powell won the girl’s 800 metersВ easilyВ with a time of 2:31.91, with the nearest competitor over five seconds behind. В Powell then went on to win the 1600 meters with a time of 5:53.43. She finished up with a win in the 3200 meters with a time of 12:23.44, a minute better than the closest competitor.

Garret Marsing, a sophomore runner from Carbon, placed first in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:46.00. Carbon’s Kaleigh took first in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-03.00.
