On a windy day Soldier Hollow last week, the Emery High girls’ golf team finished second behind the private school of Rowland Hall at the 2A state championships.

Rowland Hall came out on top with a finishing score of 267. Emery was close with a final score of 246. Two of Emery’s players, Taijah Price and Sydnee Guymon, are state medalists this year. The duo finished with scores of 74 and 72, respectively.

“Taijah and Sydnee played very well today considering the conditions,” said head coach Tom Hansen. “I know the team is disappointed today because they felt they did not play their best golf. But under these conditions and the pressure of the state tournament, I’m still very proud of them. They have worked hard now for three years and this is the first time we have received a trophy at the state tournament.”

Other scores from the tournament included Sarah Swasey and Erin Oliverson with 50 points apiece. Sydney Timothy and Lainee Jensen had 47 points each. Each and every one of the six girls have been a great contributor to the team throughout the season, Hansen explained. Their efforts are much appreciated.

“I am just so blessed to be able to coach such a great group of girls that have such great parents and such great community support,” Hansen said. “The other schools always comment on how great our girls treat their girls, and how our parents treat the girls on the other teams with so much respect. I’m just so proud of all of them.”
