On Saturday, January 26th, Region 12 High School Swimming Championships were held in Carbon. В The teams included Emery, Spanish Fork, Carbon, Richfield, Delta, Grand, and Payson High Schools.

В

There are a total of 11 events each for the girls and boys. В Out of those 11 events, Emery girls won 8 of them.

“We started the day pretty nervous, but confident that we would do well.   These swimmers have worked hard all season and now we are ready to perform,” stated Andrea Johansen, a swim coach for Emery High.

Emery started the meet with a win in the Girls 200 Medley Relay (Hailee Rogers, Jessica Guymon, Laryssa Guymon, and Chyanne Carter) with a time of 2:04.45 and a new school record.

As far as the Relays go, the Girls 200 Free Relay (Hailee Rogers, Chyanne Carter, Laryssa Guymon, and Jessica Guymon) placed first with a time of 1:50.04- also a new school record. The Girls 400 Free Relay В (Tanner Petersen, Krista Wright, Melece Pulli, and Madi Allinson) placed third with a time of 4:47.26.

Cheyanne Carter placed sixth in the 200 Freestyle В (2:31.94) and fourth in the 500 Freestyle (7:00.86); Krista Wright placed tenth in the 200 Freestyle (2:46.51), and ninth in the 500 Freestyle В (7:23.51). В  Honorable mention goes to Gentry Guymon.

Laryssa Guymon raced a season best with a first place time of 2:28.60 in the 200 IM-a new school record; Honorable mentions go to Madi Allinson (fourth place, 2:44.80), Tanner Petersen (sixth place, 2:57.39), and Melece Pulli (seventh place, 3:01.46).

“The 50 Freestyle is a fast race that has to be swum with precision.  Every detail counts and there is no room for mistakes if you want to come out on top,” stated Tammy Oliverson, head coach for Emery High. Jessica Guymon swam a perfect race with first place and a new school record of 26.96.  Honorable mentions go to Savahna Hall and Jasmine Frederick.

One of the most exciting races of the entire meet was the Girls 100 Butterfly. В Turning at the last turn, Laryssa Guymon (Emery) and Lonnie Meineche (Carbon) were head to head. В The race was determined by who hit their stroke just right at the finish. В Laryssa Guymon touched first with only a .19 difference with a new school record of 1:05.93. В Honorable mention goes to Melece Pulli (1:26.29).

“This race goes to show that the details in practice count.  It is the difference between a win or a loss at a meet, “ stated Oliverson.

The 100 Freestyle was supposed to be a close race; however, Hailee Rogers blew the competition out of the water. В Hailee Rogers swam a best time with a first place win with a time of 59.77. В This was the first time she swam under a minute all season. Honorable mentions go to Valerie Chynoweth and Jasmine Frederick.

The Girls 100 Backstroke was a point builder for Emery.  Every one of Emery’s swimmers scored points in this event.  Hailee Rogers placed first (1:08.63)- a new school record; Madi Allinson placed third (1:14.48); Tanner Petersen placed fifth (1:18.85); and Valerie Chynoweth placed eleventh (1:36.08).

With no contest, Jessica Guymon won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:14.63.  Adding to Emery’s points was Savahna Hall with a time of 1:34.35.

Overall, Girls and Boys combined placed second, behind Spanish Fork.

‘The whole meet was almost magical,” said Johansen.

“All but a few swims were best times for Emery.  It is always fun to win and to perform well, but overall, the Emery Swim Team prides itself on building a ‘Family Team’.”

“We take care of each other and make sure we are progressing in and out of the pool.  We as coaches expect excellence from these swimmers in their attitudes, the way they treat each other, and in their efforts.  We believe that if they come to the pool with their ‘best selves’, then everything else will naturally fall into place.  We love these kids and we are so pleased with all of them.”
