The end of the first quarter found the Emery High Spartans and the Summit Academy Bears tied during the season opener for the Castle Dale-based high school on Friday, 7-7.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, that would be the last time they managed to score. The Bears pushed past the Spartans during the second quarter, taking the score to 20-7 at half time.

Upon returning to the field, both teams battled through another two quarters, though neither was able to put up more points. The game finished with Summit Academy taking the win, 20-7.

Logan Cox rushed 12 times for 104 yards while teammate Easton Gordon added 38 more on nine carries. Quarterback Zach Jorgensen completed just four of 17 passes for 52 yards.

The Spartans will be on the road for their next game, a matchup against the Payson Lions this Friday. After the Spartans and Lions take to the field, Emery will host its first home game of the season against the Delta Rabbits on Sept. 2.
