Food for Thought: Cantaloupe

By Patti Rigby, Carbon School District Nutritional Director

Summer lunch attendees are enjoying a special sweet treat now that melon is fully in season. Cantaloupe is being served at our FREE summer lunch sites thanks to the generosity of our local Elks BPOE 1550. Their donation makes it possible to serve delicious fresh fruits at every site all summer long! Cantaloupe is a very good source of potassium and also supplies us with a host of B vitamins (B1, B3, B6 and folate) as well as vitamin K, magnesium and fiber.

Even the seeds have benefits! When the edible seeds are eaten, this sweet melon also provides a measurable about of healthy omega-3 fat in the form of alpha-linolenic acid. Come join us for a healthy and satisfying summer lunch! Check the lunch.carbonschools.org website for details.
