DWR Press Release

Free event happens June 9 and 10

Salt Lake City — Two days of free fun are waiting for you and your family at this year’s Outdoor Adventure Days.

Shooting firearms and bows and arrows, catching catfish in a fishing pond, riding an all-terrain vehicle and paddling a kayak are among the activities you can do at the fourth annual event.

Outdoor Adventure Days will be held June 9 and June 10 at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range, 6000 W. 2100 S. in Salt Lake City. Hours are noon – 7 p.m. on June 9, and 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on June 10.

The event is free, and you’re welcome to show up any of those days. If you’d like a chance to win some prizes, though, you need to register in advance.

To register for the event, or for more information, visit www.oad.utah.gov.

Marni Lee, Wildlife Recreation coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says Outdoor Adventure Days has something for everyone.

“If you don’t have a lot of experience in the outdoors,” she says, “Outdoor Adventure Days is the perfect place to try some of these activities for the first time.”

Even if you have some experience, Lee says it’s still a great event to attend.

“If you’re proficient with firearms—but you’ve never shot a bow and arrow—here’s your chance,” she says. “Or, maybe you’ve shot a rifle before, but you’ve never shot a shotgun at a flying target. You can at the event.”

Here’s a quick rundown of the activities awaiting you:

·         Catch channel catfish in a fishing pond. When one of these catfish takes your bait, prepare for a fight: some of the catfish are 18 inches long.

Everything you need to fish will be provided. If you don’t have a fishing license, visit on June 10. June 10 is Free Fishing Day in Utah, so you won’t need a license to fish at the event that day.

·         Hop in a kayak, and try it out. A large kayak pond will be constructed before the event.

·         Take an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) for a spin on the event’s riding course.

·         Shoot a variety of firearms, including pistols, rifles, muzzleloaders and shotguns. If you haven’t shot much, no problem; instructors will be available to teach you the basics.

·         Shoot a bow and arrow.

·         Watch trained hunting dogs in action. Demonstrations will be given every 20 minutes.

More than 10 organizations have partnered with the DWR, Utah State Parks, the Mule Deer Foundation and Sportsman’s Warehouse to put the free event together.
