DWR Press Release

Learn ice fishing basics on Dec. 12

Salt Lake City – With cold weather descending on Utah, it won’t be long before ice starts forming on fishing waters across the state. If you’ve never fished through the ice before—or you have some experience, but you’re looking to improve your skills—a free clinic on Dec. 12 is the perfect place to be. If you attend, you might even win a raffle prize.

Two avid ice anglers—James Bradshaw with Maniac Lures and Kent Sorenson, a regional fisheries biologist with the Division of Wildlife Resources—will teach the seminar. Staying warm and comfortable on the ice, the type of fishing gear you’ll need, and how to get on the ice and drill a hole, are among the basics you’ll learn.

The free Dec. 12 seminar is sponsored by Utah’s Blue Ribbon Fisheries Advisory Council. It runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Department of Natural Resources, 1594 W. North Temple in Salt Lake City.

Marni Lee, Wildlife Recreation coordinator for the DWR, says the seminar is open to anyone who has an interest in ice fishing.

“If you’re a beginning angler,” Lee says, “the seminar will give you the confidence you need to gather your gear and hit the ice. If you already have some ice fishing experience, you should still pick up some tips that will help you improve your skills.”

If you have questions about the seminar, call the DWR’s Salt Lake City office at 801-538-4700.
