Herriman and Riverton No Match for Ignite AAU Basketball Team

The local Ignite AAU basketball team recently traveled to Salt Lake City to play in the AAU Winter Super League. Ignite started their season opener against Herriman, where they won the game 53-40.

Tyler Moynier netted a team high of 17 points and five assists in the game. Brendan Palacios also helped lead the team to its victory with 10 points and eight rebounds. Jaxon Carlisle had a total of nine points while hitting three from downtown. Jabari Griffin chipped in two points while Oscar Herrera had four.

After the team’s first successful match, they found themselves going head-to-head in a tough fought game with the Riverton Silver Wolves. Ignite outscored Riverton 30-26 at the end of the first half but would then be tied 45-45 with only 10 seconds left on the clock.

While there was a lot of pressure and determination of winning the game, Riley Mitcheson blocked a shot, which led the two teams into overtime.

With just two minutes into overtime,  Moynier hit a three pointer while Palacios obtained an assist. This would then result in Ignite taking the lead, 48-45, right before Riverton took a 49-48 lead with only ten seconds left.

With only six seconds left and Ignite down only one point. Palacios took a shot but happened to miss. JP Powell then grabbed the rebound and made the shot with only two seconds remaining on the clock. With no more time left on the clock during overtime, Ignite (now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the league) successfully obtained another win with a score of 50-49.

In the game, Moynier had 21 points with four assists and 10 rebounds, good for a double-double. Powell also had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Carlisle chipped in a three pointer, had four rebounds and two assists while Palacios managed 12 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Taio Badback added five rebounds and Griffin recorded two steals and three rebounds. Mitcheson notching a career high four blocks in the game.

Ignite will travel to Draper on the Jan. 23 where they will play Kongo and A-Train at 6 and 7 p.m. for their third and fourth league games.

The local basketball team consists of Carlisle, Mitcheson, Moynier, Palacious, Badback, Griffin, Herrera, Powell, Jaydon Freeze, Jordan Thomas and Jaylon Dennis. Ignite is coached by Anthony Campbell.
