The John Wesley Powell Museum in Green River has many programs available for scouts and schools. These programs are offered at different grade levels.

Letterboxing (Grades 3-9)
Letterboxing combines treasure hunting, puzzle solving and navigation. Learn the basics of orienteering and craft your own stamps before following clues and your compasses to find letterboxes hidden near the museum (River History Expedition Letterboxing) or in downtown Green River (Green River Discovery Letterboxing).

History Mystery (Grades 5 – 12)
What can a group of artifacts tell you about the past? Examine objects and primary source documents to piece together a picture of the past. Current History Mystery topics include Georgie White Clark (a 20th century river runner) and Cold War Civil Defense. Participants don’t need any prior knowledge about the topics to participate!

Primarily Powell (Grades 7-12)
Exercise your creativity and write and perform a short skit about John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers! Participants will get an introduction to reading primary sources and showcase their interpretive and creative talents on the stage at the museum.

Group Tours (all ages)
Let us know the ages, interests and needs of your group and we can create a customized tour. Past tours have included mad-libs with our animatronics, peeks behind the scenes, games and more.

Junior River Runner Challenge (all ages)
Learn about the history of river running on the Colorado Plateau as you work your way through the museum. Become a Junior River Runner and receive a mini-paddle keychain to prove to your friends that you’re well on your way to becoming a Hall of Fame river runner. Ask about the Junior River Runner Challenge at the museum’s front desk.

Contact Tim Glenn (jwpdirector@gmail.com or 435-564-3427) for more information on any of these programs. Paid admission will be required.
