The submission period has closed for the Wonders of the Swell photos contest and over 20 entries can be found in the judge’s final sites to take the top prize: a feature in an upcoming edition of the National Geographic Traveler Magazine.

Submissions were accepted beginning in April with a firm deadline of May 31. From there, the field was narrowed down to the top photos in three categories, including professional, amateur and youth.

“Thank you, again, to all participants who made this such a difficult contest to judge,” contest organizers shared. “The decisions for the photos that will advance were not easy and your participation is greatly appreciated.”

According to contest organizers, 25 places will be awarded prizes from the photos that have been chosen by the judge to advance to the exhibit. The final places will be announced on June 23 at the John Wesley Powell Museum in Green River at 6 p.m. One of the awards that will be announced is the people’s choice award, which can be voted on online.

Judge Bob Maynard will next evaluate the top contenders. Maynard founded Colorado Plateau Photo Tours in 2008 and since then, nearly one thousand photographers have used his services. He and his wife, Cindy, have published two books, “A Photographer’s Guide to Colorado’s National Parks and Monuments” and “Ancient Skies Through Ancient Eyes.” Maynard has given presentations to camera clubs in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Illinois and Arizona.
