Junior High Rodeo Gearing up For State Finals

The final weekend of junior high rodeos added places and points for several Emery Junior Rodeo Team members on Friday and Saturday at Tremonton, Utah.

Cache Valley hosted the Friday event. In chute dogging, Josh Olsen was fourth and Race Gordon finished 10th. Byron Christiansen placed second in bareback riding, first in the saddle bronc competition, 10th in boys’ goats and seventh in team roping with partner Todd Sweat.

In the boys’ breakaway, Race Gordon was eighth. Ribbon roping times gave Monty Christiansen and partner Jacelyn Frost four points for placing seventh.

On Saturday, the Wasatch Front Junior High Club hosted its rodeo, also at Tremonton. Kinlie Jensen and Graycee Mills were eighth and 10th respectively in the girls’ breakaway competition. Mills also was seventh in barrel racing and in ribbon roping. Cole Magnuson rode his bull for a second place score and placed eighth in chute dogging. Josh Olsen took third in dogging.

Byron Christiansen was second in bareback and in team roping with partner Sweat and also placed fourth in boys’ breakaway. Matt Olsen, with partner Carson Lawson, roped fast enough for sixth place. Ribbon roping placers were Mills and Cottar Deveraux, seventh, and Zeek Weber and Kylie Carter, ninth.

State finals for the junior high rodeo teams starts Friday in Heber City. Event leaders in the various competitions will compete at the state level. All of the team members have earned a place to compete in Heber this coming weekend.

Mills is currently sitting sixth in the girls’ all-around and Byron Christiansen is first in boys’ all-around. The top placing cowboys and cowgirls will earn the privilege to compete in South Dakota at nationals at the end of June.
