Lady Dinos Smash Competition at St. George Tourney

Despite a one-run setback in their second game on Friday, the Carbon Lady Dinos outscored their opponents 46-10 over four other games, all wins, at the March Warm-Up tournament in St. George over the weekend.

The Lady Dinos kicked off the tourney on Friday against Century High School from Pocatello, Idaho, a game they won 7-2. Carbon scored all of its runs in the first three innings and didn’t allow a run past the second to get the victory. Freshman Kaytlyn Cripps got the win in the circle for Carbon.

The team then turned around and played Highland High School, also from Pocatello. This was the lone defeat for Carbon during the weekend, which ended with a 2-1 Highland win. Despite striking out five batters, junior Kinley Nelson took the loss.

Playing its third game on Friday, Carbon ended with a 10-run victory over another Idaho School, this time Lincoln County. Junior McKenna Sorenson had seven strikeouts and earned the win, and sophomore Cali Fossat nailed a homer in the game. Junior Chandelle Nicholls and Nelson each contributed doubles in the 12-2 Dino win.

Looking to finish the tournament strong on Saturday, the Lady Dinos beat South Sevier and 4A Bonneville in consecutive games by a combined 27-6 margin. McKenna Sorenson again powered her team to the win against South Sevier. Her sister Kelsey had a double, as did Nichols. Senior Alex Thayn also hit a home run in the in the 18-1 game that featured a no-hitter by McKenna and another pitcher. McKenna again took to the circle against Bonneville and got the win for Carbon. Cripps homered and junior Makayla Lupo nailed a double in the 9-5 victory.

Carbon (6-1, 0-0 Region 12) will take its three-game win streak to 4A Provo (1-6, 0-0 Region 7) on Wednesday.
