Lady Pirates Take Victory Against Wendover After Nonregion Loss

The Green River Lady Pirates faced off last Thursday and Friday against Duchesne and Wendover, respectively, and managed a 53-44 victory against the latter.

During Thursday’s bout of action at Duchesne, Green River ended the first half trailing 24-16 to the Eagles. The third quarter was a challenge for the Lady Pirates, with Duchesne netting 17 and Green River not managing any points. Both teams fought in the fourth before finishing with a 47-21 overall score.

Friday’s match was played to a different tune for the Lady Pirates, who walked away with a 53-44 victory against the Wendover Wildcats. Green River grabbed an early lead in the first, leading the game 14-10. They continued dominance into the second and pulled forward in the third to put up a game-high 19.

Green River continued to lead in the fourth en route to the victory.

Junior Maribel Escalante led her team in scoring over the two matches, putting up a combined 31 points and seven three-pointers. Daniela Mendez also made her way into the double figures, managing 22 and two three-pointers. Senior Savannah Williams also did her share, putting up 14. Freshman Kambree Brewer drained a three-point shot in Thursday’s match.

Green River’s next chance at victory will come on Tuesday, Jan. 3 against Altamont after the holidays.
