Lady Spartans Win Two, Drop Three in St. George

The Emery Lady Spartans traveled to St. George over the weekend to participate in the March Warm-Up tournament. In five games, Emery scored 63 runs and finished with a 2-3 record.

In game one on Friday, Emery faced off against Summit Academy, whom it beat March 11, 15-7. In another high-scoring affair, the Lady Spartans scored nine in the sixth inning to take another game from the Bears, 24-20. Jayla Weston led Emery with five RBIs on three hits that included a double and triple. Jessica Mason, Kelsey Reeve and Morgann Donaldson each added three RBIs in the game. The Lady Spartans tallied seven extra-base hits in the game.

Against 4A Highland, Emery let a late lead slip away, losing 14-13. After falling behind 8-4 after the first inning, the Lady Spartans scored seven runs in the third and fourth innings combined to take the 11-9 lead. Highland scored four in the sixth for the comeback win. Bailey Huggard led Emery with three hits and four RBIs, including a home run. She was a triple short of the cycle. Shaylee Jewkes also hit a home run in the game.

Emery’s worst game of the weekend came against Hurricane. The Lady Spartans scored two of their three runs in the first inning but couldn’t hold Hurricane back in the fourth and fifth en route to the 18-3 loss. Hurricane 11 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings.

Emery responded against Millard on Saturday, beating the Eagles 17-10. Trailing 10-6 going into the fourth inning, Emery scored eight runs to take the lead and then padded the lead in the fifth with three more. Huggard got the win in the circle and Reeve and Jewkes each knocked in three runs apiece. Fourteen of the 15 hits by Emery were singles.

In their last game of the tournament, Emery faced off against Morgan. Despite another three RBIs from Huggard on a double and single, the Lady Spartans committed seven errors in the game that led to 11 unearned Morgan runs. Emery lost the game 16-6.

Emery (3-5, 0-1 2A East) will host Altamont (0-4, 0-1 2A North) on Wednesday.
