Local Teams Shine at State Cross Country

The Emery boys finished in second place in the 2A division Wednesday morning at the UHSAA State Cross Country Championships at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.

In all, representatives from Carbon, Emery and Pinnacle high schools participated in the event.

McKay Meccariello was the top finisher for Emery, coming in with a time of 17:46.5, good for 12th overall. Close behind were teammates Chase Christiansen (16th, 17:53.2) and Ty Funk (17th, 17:59.3). Meccariello and Christiansen are just freshman, Funk is a sophomore. Tanyon Allred (32), McKoy Christiansen (47), Daryl Guymon (60) and Wyatt Cox (62) also ran for the Spartans. Ninety total runners took part in the event.

Emery’s Erin Hurst and Tarryn Parkins were the lone qualifiers on the girl’s team to take part in the event. Hurst finished fifth overall (20:46.0) and Parkins completed the race in 42nd (23:41.6).

Pinnacle sent 10 total runners to the state meet. The girl’s team finished in seventh place out of eight total teams. Freshman Savana Dart came in first for the Panthers in 37th place. Dellanie Paletta (46), Misty Bingham (49), Kaeley Taylor (51), Kaysha Dunegan-Clegg (55), Nikki Borba (63) and Shylinn Lofley (66) all finished the race for Pinnacle.

The Pinnacle boy’s team didn’t have enough qualifiers to place as a team, but Noah Mascarenas came across the finish line first for the Panthers in 36th overall position. Huntter Sherman and Bodie Barker finished back-to-back in 50th and 51st.

Emily Broadbear, who finished in 46th place with a time of 21:09.4, led the Carbon girls in the race. The team finished in 12th place out of 16 teams. Sadie Crompton (59), Sarah Ohlwiler (77), Jordyn Oman (78), Zaharah Rossi (79) and Emma Haddock (83) were the other finishers from Carbon.

Drew Jones was the top finisher for the Carbon boy’s team on Wednesday. He finished in 63rd with a time of 18:14.8. Anthony Jones (83), Paul Bryner (84), Trey Richardson (94), Kaden Kranendonk (100), Logan Engar (102) and Kyle Quinton (113) anchored the team, which placed 14th out of 16 teams.
