Local Track Teams Compete at BYU Invitational

Carbon, Emery, Pinnacle and Green River high schools all participated in the BYU Invitational on Saturday.

Emery’s Ashlyn Allred led her team with an impressive first place finish in the 200 meters and a second place in the 100 meters. Erin Hurst also earned points for the Spartans, coming in fifth in the 3200 meters. Emery’s girl’s sprint medley finished in fifth place while the boy’s ended in eighth. Patyn Jeffs also earned points for Emery, tying for fourth in the high jump and taking seventh in the long jump.

Green River also had an impressive showing at the invitational. Jon Mendez finished in a three-way tie for third in the high jump and Corbin Mecham earned points with a fifth place finish in the shot put. Tyrell Shumway rounded out the team’s scoring with a second place finish in the javelin.

Carbon sophomore Sarah Ohlwiler notched a sixth place finish in the long jump, earning points for the team. Jordan Scoggins earned a ninth place finish in the javelin.

Four Pinnacle Panthers, Hunter Sherman, Misty Bingham, Kaeley Taylor and Nyet Rasmussen, also had showings at the meet. Sherman competed in the long jump and the 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore Rasmussen participated in the 100 and 200 meters while Taylor took part in the long jump. Bingham rounded out the Panthers efforts in the 400 meters.

All teams will gear up for region track meets this week. Carbon will host the region competition on Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 10 a.m. Pinnacle and Green River will meet at San Juan High School on Wednesday. The Spartans will travel to North Sevier for the region competition on Thursday.
