Melvin Vilhelm Gilbert

Melvin Vilhelm Gilbert, 93, died March 2, 2018 at his home in Lawrence, with his family by his side.

He was born Feb 28, 1925 in Riverton, to Albert and Johanna Gilbert.  He was fourth of fourteen children.  Melvin grew up in Riverton, attended Jordan High School, served in the navy during World War II.

He married Joan Blanche Oborn on June 16, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple.  Their 70 years together have been filled with much love, joy and sorrow.  He was a loving father of nine children.

He farmed in Riverton almost 50 years, raising hay, grains, potatoes, and cattle.  He worked at the sugar factory in West Jordan for many years.  In 1997 they moved to Lawrence to continue farming which he loved. He was always a hard worker, good friend and a GREAT father.  One of his greatest joys was being with his family.

We will miss his stories, his teasing and all the great times together.  We hold dear the lessons of life that he taught us.  We love you Dad and Grandpa!

Melvin is survived by his wife Joan; children Ken (Connie) of Huntington; Duane (Kolene) of Castle Dale; Jeanine (Tom) Heward of Bluffdale; Amy (Loren) Casterline of South Jordan; Janet (Scott) Olsen of Duchesne; and Paul (Sharmon) of Lawrence.  21 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.

Preceded in death by daughters Christina, Gloria, Lori; and grandson Stase.
