Miss Emery County Jaicelyn Shakespaere visited Castle Dale Elementary on Thursday. One of her many duties as Miss Emery County includes going to local schools schools and talking to the students about her platform.

Jaicelyn’s platform involves fundraising and bringing attention of the Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (FSMA.) Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder that affects the muscles and can occur in babies and can grow into adulthood.

She chose this platform because her nephew Mathis Shakespaere was diagnosed with type 1 SMA when he was only 6 months old.

The FSMA Foundation helped Mathis and his family during that trying time in their lives. The FSMA Foundation provides help for families by providing them with items such special baby seats, bathing materials, quilts and toys and many other items.

Jaicelyn is currently gaining support for the FSMA Foundation by asking for donations.

During the assembly, students enjoyed a dance performance from Cottonwood Elementary second grader Jaylynn Lindley and Miss Emery’s rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s song “At Last.”
