The Friends of Helper Library program created a fun summertime recurring activity that would get those who participated out into the world. This program is Nature Journaling.

The journaling takes place in six workshops over the course of three months. The small fee provided materials and any proceeds went to the Helper Library. Roy and Anne Morgan Jespersen of Helper also made a donation to help provide colored pencils to the group.

Taylor Powelson began nature journaling on her own to become more observant of her outdoor surroundings. She found it so rewarding that she had the idea to teach workshops locally. With the help of two of her close friends as well as the Helper Library, the workshops came to life.

Each workshop takes place in a different outdoor setting. So far, the Helper City Park, Spring Canyon, Gigliotti Pond and the Helper River Trail have all been used. About 35 adults and children signed up to be a part of the program. At the end of each workshop, the participants are able to walk away from the experience with tools for observation and documentation in the outdoor world.

“Although it is too late to join for this year’s workshops, Helper Library, the Bears and myself hope to make this a yearly event during the summer months. More information can be found on Facebook at Helper Nature Journaling,” Powelson stated.
