The Carbon High basketball team lost a last-second heart breaker 57-56 to visiting North Sanpete on Friday evening in Price.

The Dinos turned the ball over while trying to hold for the last shot, and the Hawks capitalized on the subsequent free-throw attempts to secure the victory. Carbon hit just 10-of-21 free-throw attempts, and North Sanpete shot 15-of-21 from the charity stripe.

Carbon head coach Jeff Cisneros was critical of his team’s mental state throughout preparation for the game.

“This loss stems from two bad days of practice and a poor performance at Juab on Wednesday,” Cisneros said. “This loss wasn’t just because we came out and played terrible tonight. It’s how we’ve practiced and played all week.”

Cisneros went on to criticize many aspects of his team’s effort.

“We didn’t get out and run the floor, and we’re not making free-throws,” Cisneros said. “We have no one to blame but ourselves for this loss. For me, I can’t beg guys who are 16, 17, or 18-years-old to show up to play basketball … they either want to show up and play or they’re not going to, so I can sit and scream at them all day long, but I’m not going to do that. They need to show up ready to play.

“I told them this was going to happen if this is what we continued to do,” Cisneros continued. “When it gets to that point when you’re asking for effort, there’s not much more a coach can do. You can coach Xs and Os and you can give them things to do, but you can’t coach effort.”

Cisneros stressed the players would need to be ready to play next week because the Dinos were faced with two tough games. Carbon travels to Delta on Wednesday and hosts Region 12 leader Payson on Friday.

Jordan Blanc led the Dinos with 19 points. Tanner Gagnon followed with 13 points.

The game was broadcast live on ETV Channel 10.
