Public Lands Concerns Quelled

Those worried about costs associated with closing off old mines in Emery County breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday at the Emery County Public Lands meeting.

Options that would ease the financial burden, including requesting help from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), were discussed at the meeting. Provided the correct paperwork were submitted, it was reported that the BLM would provide funding for gates to help block old mine entrances.

Regarding other business, Marc Stilson from the State Division of Water Rights provided updates on current dam projects. Stilson suggested future safety trainings on the proper courses of action should a dam break in the area.

A $3 million budget cut to the Utah State Parks and Recreation department was also discussed. Fortunately, the budget reduction will not result in park closures or elevated usage fees. Savings from previous years and personnel reductions will help make up for the budget cut.
