A second quarter comeback by the Green River Lady Pirates was not enough to secure a Region 19 win over #1 Wayne on Tuesday night.

Early shooting woes put the Lady Pirates behind early as the team managed only two points in the first quarter, trailing 16-2 going into the second. Green River would go on to score a game high 18 points in the second, while holding Wayne to eight points, to close the gap to 24-20 at the break.

Wayne tamed the Pirates’ energy in the second half, outscoring the hosting Pirates 25-18, to take the win and keep its undefeated region record alive.

Green River was led by Maribel Escalante who put up 15 points, including three treys. Daniela Mendez added nine in the team’s effort, three of which came from a downtown bucket.

Green River (5-12, 3-5 Region 19) will look for a home win against Whitehorse (4-9, 2-6 Region 19) on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
