With a total of 27 boys on this year’s team, the Emery High Baseball squad is eager to begin the season especially moving down a classification from 3A to 2A.

With the change, Head Coach Steven Gordon has high hopes for region.

“I think we will do really well, especially if the weather holds out,” he said. “Our goal this year for the team is to take region.”

Of the 27 players, 15 will participate on varsity. Dean Stilson and Dave Hreinson will help Gordon in the dugout as assistant coaches. Matt Bunnell and Shawn Alton will coach the sophomores and freshmen.

Gordon hopes to build on last season’s 12-11 record with a big season from his returning players. Senior pitcher Geren Payne returns as the team’s leading pitcher. Payne went 7-3 last season on the mound.

Emery begins the season today in Vernal against Uintah. The Spartans host Manti on Friday for their home opener. Emery will travel to Carbon on April 4 for the team’s only matchup of the season.
