Spartan Wrestlers “Battle at the Pound”

Twenty-two Spartan wrestlers spent the weekend at Gunnison Valley High School at the Battle of the Pound. Eighteen teams from throughout the state participated.

The Spartan squad garnered 72.5 points for a sixth-place finish. With no wrestlers in the 182, 195 and 220 pound weight classes, the rest of the wrestlers did well. Both varsity and junior varsity wrestlers competed in different divisions.

In the 106 weight class, Dwain Farley placed fourth in varsity competition and Jacob Ewell took second in the open class. In the 113 class, Korby Christiansen was second in varsity and Devin Kelly took third in the open while Kayson Jensen finished fifth. Drake Mangum, 120 varsity, was third with Dax Hall, first, Zayn Defa, third, and Colton Boren, eighth, in the open. Gage Mangum placed eighth in varsity in the 126 weight class. Zach World, 132, was fourth in varsity with Adien Mortensen in first and Zane Funk in fourth in the open division.

Varsity wrestler Bryar Meccariello, 138, was seventh; McKay Meccariello, 145, finished third; Gus Dalton, 157, placed second; Newt Oveson, 170, third; 285 weight class AC Reeve, third, and Drake Hoffman fifth. Szion Gibson was second in the open 160 pound weight class.

The Emery High team will wrestle at Manti on Wednesday and then participate in the Rumble at UVU this coming weekend.
