With only one game under their belts on the season, the Emery Spartans made an emphatic statement in their Region 15 opener against the visiting North Sevier Wolves. Ethan Tuttle homered and doubled in the 14-4 game that went just five innings.

After a scoreless first inning, North Sevier got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Emery responded with three of its own in the bottom half of the same inning. After the Wolves regained the lead in the third with two more runs, Tuttle doubled, clearing the bases in same inning, putting the Spartans ahead for good.

Emery went on to score eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, invoking the mercy rule. Tuttle hit a two-run home run in the inning.

Dillon Wilstead picked up the win, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out six. With the win, Wilstead has a career mark of 10-3.

Mark Debry, Ridge and Race Nielson and Tanner Lake each contributed doubles on the afternoon.

The Spartans will make their annual trek to Montrose, Colo. for three games over the weekend. Emery has participated in the tournament every year since 2002. Games will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday and 9:30 and 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.

Emery (1-1, 1-0 Region 15) will then host Grand (2-1, 0-0 Region 15) on Tuesday.
