Spartans Score Late, But Not Enough in Loss to Gunnison

The Emery Spartans kicked off the 2018 campaign in Gunnison on Tuesday afternoon, dropping the game 10-6.

It was 10-2 entering the seventh when the Spartans plated four runs, coming up just short in the comeback attempt.

After the Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the first, Emery responded with two of its own in the second, taking the lead.

Gunnison then scored another in the third to tie the score, then two more in the fourth and three each in the fifth and sixth innings for the win.

Colton Willson went 3-4 in the game with a double and two singles. Cade Brazier added two hits in four at-bats. Jesse Barnett had two RBIs on a double in four plate appearances. Koda Alton had the other RBI in the game for the Spartans.

Emery drew 10 walks in the game, struck out 17 times and left nine on base.

Logan Healy took the loss on the mound after going 4 2/3 innings, striking out four batters. Jace Collard pitched the rest of the game, giving up four earned.

Emery (0-1, 0-0 Region 15) will travel to Mesquite, NV this weekend to participate in a tournament.
