The Emery Spartans dropped their opening round 2A Playoff game on Saturday 6-3 versus Summit Academy, before taking a 17-6 win over South Summit in the loser’s bracket. The games took place at Kanab High School.

Emery will now take on Providence Hall Thursday at 11 a.m. at Taylorsville High School.

The Spartans stranded 13 runners on base. They also out hit the Bears 10-9.

The loss forced Emery to the loser’s bracket and a matchup with South Summit. Emery pounded out 17 hits to go along with 17 runs, ending the game in five innings.

Five players had at least two hits in the game, with four of them (Jordan Baletka, Gardner, Labrum and Jorgensen) notching three hits apiece. Seven players registered at least two RBIs as well, led by Keaton McDermott who smashed a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth. Baletka, Gardner, Labrum, Nielsen, Jorgensen and Koda Alton combined for the other 13 RBIs in the win. Gardner, Labrum and Nielsen each bashed two doubles apiece. Jorgensen legged out a triple as well.

Jorgensen went the distance on the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out two.

Should Emery beat Providence Hall on Thursday, it would then play at 4:30 p.m. A loss would end the 2016-17 season.
