Students Compete in Emery County District Spelling Bee

Fourth and eighth grade students that won the spelling bee in their class from each school in the county met on Wednesday afternoon at Emery High School to compete in the Emery District Spelling Bee.

Andie Curtis, a seventh grade student from San Rafael Jr. High, took first place with seventh grade Canyon View Jr. High student Jayce Rudd coming in second. Dani Jo Thatcher, a sixth grade student from Cleveland Elementary, rounded out the top three.

The regional spelling bee will be hosted at Grand County High School in Moab on March 2 at 1 p.m. The top three students from each district bee in Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan counties as well as Pinnacle Canyon Academy will compete for an opportunity to go to Washington D.C. to compete in the National Spelling Bee.

The students who won the spelling bee in each grade are as follows:
Book Cliff Elementary: 4th grade – Abigail Erwin, 5th grade –  Saul Tellez and 6th grade –  Morgan Bastian.
Castle Dale Elementary: 4th grade – Adriane Bernard, 5th grade – Dallin Jorgensen and 6th grade – Natalie Chynoweth.
Cleveland Elementary: 4th grade – Jacee Cunningham, 5th grade –  Baylee Jacobsen and 6th grade –  Dani Jo Thatcher.
Ferron Elementary: 4th grade  – Haidyn Roper, 5th grade –  Byron Christiansen and 6th grade  – Nathan Rice.
Huntington Elementary: 4th grade – Madilyn Simmons, 5th grade – Daicee Ungerman and 6th grade –  Bethany Justice.
Cottonwood Elementary: 4th grade – Allee Sitterud, 5th grade – Trevin Wakefield and 6th grade – Alisa Robertson.
Canyon View Jr. High: 7th grade – Jayce Rudd and 8th – grade Abigail Olsen.
San Rafael Jr. High: 7th grade – Andie Curtis and 8th grade Ethan Anderson.
Green River: 7th grade –  Rebecka Shaffer and 8th grade – Prisma Mendez.
