The Rio Theatre to Present ‘No Girls Allowed Club’

Girls have taken over the playground! The boys have all been driven into hiding! The Girls have a secret special guest coming to their next Girls-Only Tea Party! What if it’s a grown up? The Boys will never get within ten feet of the playground again!

It’s up to the die-hard members of the No Girls Only Club to get the playground back from the Girls and save it from Girl Games, but things get worse when their chief scout Arnold develops a crush on the Girls leader. Will the Girls have the playground forever? Will the love-sick Arnold betray them all? Will there ever be peace or will they all die of cooties and be buried in the sandbox, just like Timmy’s legos?

“No Girls Allowed Club” is an original children’s play written by Nicholas Dunn (USU/CEU and University of Utah Actor’s Training Program graduate and former Price resident) and performed by the
University of Utah’s Youth Theatre (UUYT). In partnership with The OtherSide Players and The Helper Arts Council, The Rio Theatre is pleased to have been chosen to present this delightful, family-friendly, and soon-to-be “international” play to the Southeastern Utah area.

According to UUYT Director, Penelope Caywood, the youth theatre has been selected to represent the United States and perform “No Girls Allowed Club” at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in
August 2011 as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF). The Fringe Festival is the largest and most prestigious arts festival in the world and includes over 1,800 different performances of music, theatre, dance, and comedy during its three-week run, attracting over a half million tourists. Less than five percent of schools/programs nominated are invited to attend.

UUYT has grown to become a strong theatre and education organization for young people along the Wasatch Front and is nationally recognized for the breadth and strength of its programs. For over 25 years it has served over 11,000 children and families a year with imaginative high-quality productions and wide-ranging education programs for ages 5-18.

UUYT will also hold a FREE Acting Workshop on Saturday morning, May 21, from 10 a.m. until noon, for approximately 20 students and as many children who would like to audit the class. The class will be
held on the Rio Theatre stage. Please call Dean Gundlach at 435-637-3705 to register.
