Spartans Outlast Gunnison on Senior Night in High-Scoring Game, 18-17*Photo Gallery*

The bats were busy at Emery High on Thursday during senior night, and when the dust cleared the Spartans had an 18-17 win over Gunnison in seven innings.

There were 36 hits, including nine extra base hits in the game.

The game was back-and-forth heading into the seventh, with nine lead changes.

The Spartans finally managed to grab the lead after a strong seventh inning. The Spartans scored on a single by Ashton Bell off  Sadee Sorenson.

Gentry Noyes had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits. She doubled in the first and seventh innings.

Even though Bell allowed 17 runs over seven innings she still recorded the victory. She struck out eight, walked five and surrendered 18 hits.

The Spartans pounded Gunnison pitching, as six hitters combined for 13 hits, 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

Sorenson ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. She allowed 18 runs in 6 2/3 innings, walked four and struck out three.

Gunnison jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Lynzee Bartholomew kicked things off for Gunnison with a single. A single by Alyssa Morgan then moved Bartholomew from first to second. Gunnison added more runs when Morgan scored on a wild pitch.

It didn’t take long for the Spartans to respond as they scored seven runs of their own in the first. The Spartans scored on a two-run home run by Haylee Beckstead, a groundout by Abby Jacobsen, an error, an RBI single by Jarica Huntington, and an RBI double by Noyes.

Gunnison put up one run in each of the second, fourth and fifth. In the second, Gunnison scored on an RBI double by Braylie Peterson, plating Rhiley Mcarther.

After a quick strike from Gunnison, the Spartans responded with one run in the second. The Spartans scored on a sacrifice fly by Peterson.

The Spartans answered Gunnison’s top inning with two runs of their own in the fourth. The Spartans scored on an RBI single by Hinkins and an RBI single by Morgan.

It didn’t take long for the Spartans to answer as they scored four runs of their own in the fifth. The Spartans scored on an error and a three-run error.

The seventh spelled defeat for Gunnison, as the Spartans grabbed the lead for good. More runners rounded the bases on an RBI double by Noyes, a fielder’s choice, and an RBI single by Hinkins.
