Track Season Heating Up

All three local track teams participated in weekend meets, and did well to boot.

Both Carbon and Pinnacle made the arduous journey to Blanding to participate in the Blue Mountain Invitational hosted by San Juan High School. The Emery Spartans traveled to Gunnison for the Gunnison Invitational. Both meets took place on Saturday.

Despite missing 53 kids to other school obligations, the Dinos still nabbed an overall third place finish out of nine teams (girls second, 178; boys fifth, 79). Pinnacle finished in sixth place at the meet. In Gunnison, the Spartans placed 11th out of 21 teams.

Carbon’s Sarah Ohlwiler picked up the slack, notching three firsts and a fifth to earn 33 points on her own. She took home top honors in the 100-meter hurdles, shot put and long jump. Freshmen Derek Hillam and Emma Haddock also finished first in the 400 meters and 1600 meters, respectively. Haddock also placed in first in the 3200 meters. Caitlyn Dimick finished three inches better than second for first place in the javelin.

Pinnacle’s Misty Bingham placed fifth in two events, the 400 meters and long jump, for the team’s best finish.

Ty Mecham placed the highest for Emery, as he took third in the shot put finals.

All three track and field teams will participate in the Eastern Utah Track Championships at Carbon High School on Friday.
