Helper City Council members were brought a plethora of information and news during their regularly scheduled council meeting on Thursday evening.

Malarie Matsuda, who is running for a city council position, approached the council and requested approval for Helper City to host a Trunk or Treat event on Oct. 28, the Saturday before Halloween. Matsuda stated that it would be organized so that different families would have their cars decorated with their trunks up.

Each vehicle could have a game or activity or simply hand out treats to the youngsters. Matsuda was hopeful that this could take place in the Rio Theater parking area. She then stated that afterward, she was planning to play the Halloween favorite Hocus Pocus at the Rio.

According to Matsuda, the Trunk or Treat would take place from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the movie would begin immediately after. This was not only approved by the council members, but they agreed that it was a great idea and addition to holiday festivities in the city.

Ashley Hardy then spoke with council members on the next First Friday event, which is slated to take place on Oct. 6. Hardy requested to have the street closed once more from 6 p.m. to around 11 p.m. The closure would begin at Ivy Street and span to Hill Street. Hardy stated that she had already spoken with Cindi Curry at Balance Rock, who was okay with the closure.

Hardy then requested permission to decorate the street starting Oct. 6 with hay bails and corn stalks on the light posts and down the street. She informed the council that she would be able to obtain the decorations from her father. She then stated that if they look nice, they could be kept up until after Thanksgiving.

The council members stated that upkeep would need to be maintained on the decorations to ensure that disasters did not occur. Council Member Thomas Williams then praised Hardy on her work on the First Friday events.

“It’s working really well,” Williams stated.

The closure of the street and the decorations were then approved by the council.
