Press Release

Utah State Eastern Head Athletic Trainer Jess Brinkerhoff hosted local middle schoolers for tours of the athletic facilities last week to introduce them to the world of athletic training.

Brinkerhoff and other members of the athletic department hosted middle school classes from Mont Harmon on Wednesday and Thursday.

The students were in an athletics class and part of the class includes topics such as athletic training and sports medicine.

During the tour, Brinkerhoff spoke to the students about his profession and how to become an athletic trainer. Students also had the opportunity to try out a few of the equipment in the athletic training room such as electrotherapy device. They also learned how to tape an ankle and participate in part of the injury prevention program the USU Eastern athletes go through. At the end of each day’s tour, the students got to meet and talk with the men’s basketball team.

Brinkerhoff is glad he had the opportunity to help these students learn about athletic training and USU Eastern.

“Overall, I think the kids enjoyed the USU atmosphere, were inspired by the men’s basketball team, and hopefully some sparked an interest in the healthcare field and more specifically to athletic training,” said Brinkerhoff.

As head athletic trainer, Brinkerhoff helps and with injuries and oversees recovery and rehabilitation for all seven USU Eastern teams and spirit squad. Brinkerhoff was hired in December of 2016 and has been a great asset to Utah State Eastern, according to Athletic Director Chelsey Warburton.

“Jess has done a wonderful job organizing, training and working with the athletes and their day to day needs,” said Warburton

Warburton also said that community involvement like what Brinkerhoff did with the students is very important to the athletic department.

“Getting the community involved with our athletic department and university benefits us all. Our athletic department is very involved in community activities and in return we are seeing community support at our events,” said Warburton.
