Utah State Eastern women’s soccer opened the 2018 regular season with a 3-1 road win at Western Wyoming on Wednesday.

The Eagles found the back of the net early with two goals scored by sophomore forward Morgan Hall in the fist ten minutes of the game. Freshman Logan Duran and sophomore McKenna Wiscombe each assisted Hall on the first half goals.

Western Wyoming held off the Eagles the rest of the first half and trailed 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Western Wyoming scored on USU Eastern keeper Mya Massey in the 54 minute to cut the Eagle lead to 2-1. A couple minutes later, Duran added a goal off an assist from Wiscombe to put the Eagles up 3-1.

Massey and the Eagles’ defense prevented the Mustangs from scoring again to seal the victory in the second half.

USU Eastern head coach Ammon Bennett said after the game that his team played sloppy but was still able to control the game to get the win.

“We played a little sloppy and not up to par for what we should. We controlled most of the game but there are simple things we need to improve such as thought process, touches and speed of play but nice to get the win,” said Bennett.

Hall said her team did some good things but the win also showed her team what they can work on before the next game.

“We did some really good things today, but we still have a lot to work on. Our touches still need improvement but overall we played as a team and had a lot of shots on goal,” said Hall.

Hall also said getting the victory on the road against the Mustangs felt very rewarding after weeks of preparation for the season.

“Winning that game is a huge confidence builder. It is also a nice reward for the hard we’ve put in all summer since we’ve been back to school practicing,” said Hall.

The Eagles will open their home schedule next Friday against Sheridan at 4 p.m. Last season, the Eagles defeated Sheridan 4-1 at a neutral site in Henderson, Nev.
