Wellington City Council Rejects Proposed Tax Increase

A recently proposed property tax increase for the citizens of Wellington was disregarded by the city’s council.

Currently, Wellington City’s rate is .001859, the second lowest in the county next to Scofield’s .000494. The council discussed that raising property taxes would be a great benefit to the city and the funds could be used for many things, including but not limited to hiring another seasonal worker/police officer, setting money aside for city hall maintenance/equipment and making progress toward capital improvement goals. The idea was rejected on Wednesday.

“The Wellington City Council decided in our work meeting on Wednesday night to not move forward with a property tax increase because of the amount of our population living off of a fixed income,” councilman Pete Yakovich explained. “As a council, we will be looking for other means to increase our bottom line and work on capital improvement projects.”

Yakovich originally suggested a raise in property taxes to .003 or approximately $175,000 citywide.
