Where the Heck is Haeck Fundraiser Assists Local With Goldenhars Syndrome

Eating live crickets and smashing eggs on your head in a game called egg roulette may not sound like events that normally take place at Community Nursing Services (CNS), but, on a recent chilly morning, these events transpired. CNS, along with Aaron Haeck of KUSA’s Where the Heck is Haeck segment, recently teamed up for a good cause.

The Fear Factor Fundraiser was geared toward raising money for local resident Katie Edwards. Edwards is a young girl diagnosed with Goldenhar Syndrome. Goldenhar Syndrome is a rare congenital defect characterized by incomplete development of the ear, nose, soft palate, lip and mandible.

Edwards is currently deaf and going blind in her right eye. While her left eye is still in great shape, she is at risk for injury due to the decrease in depth perception. She has had around 19 surgeries and 26 sedations already in an attempt to correct the effects of Goldenhar Syndrome. However, a lot of medical care is still required.

At the fundraiser, $803 was raised for Edwards. That’s a total of $303 more than the goal. More is being done for Edwards. Brittnie Madena of Miner’s Trading Post in Sunnyside is spearheading festivities for the Halloween season.

On Oct. 29, a 5K to benefit Edwards will take place. Check-in for the race begins at 1:15 p.m. at Miners Trading Post, with the 5K beginning at 2 p.m. The cost is $15 a person and $25 for a family.

Following the 5K, there will be a sale of Navajo tacos as well as a haunted house and trunk or treat, all located once more at Miner’s Trading Post. These events will begin at 4 p.m. For more information or to learn ways to assist, please call (435) 888-4416.
